Free mobile shower and hygiene programs provide essential wellness services, clean clothing, and access to resources for people experiencing homelessness. These programs operate using custom-outfitted trailers that travel directly to parks, shelters, and community centers to restore dignity and improve the health of those they serve.
What are mobile shower programs?
Mobile shower units are buses, trailers, or vans equipped with private shower stalls, hot water, sinks, and hygiene supplies. They often include laundry services, clothing donations, and referrals to health services, becoming much more than just a place to get clean. These programs emphasize dignity, respect, and community connection for individuals experiencing homelessness.

Fresh Start WASH & Wellness
Fresh Start WASH & Wellness is a mobile hygiene program managed by The WASH Foundation (an evolution of Clean the World) that provides free mobile showers, restrooms, and basic care resources to people experiencing homelessness. The initiative operates an expanding fleet of fully self-contained trailers deployed across various cities and counties nationwide.
Trailer design and capabilities
Each custom-built, lightweight trailer—measuring 36 or 40 feet in length—is towed by a standard pickup truck and designed for maximum autonomy:
Operational autonomy: The units carry their own water and integrated power systems, allowing them to set up in empty parking lots, parks, or street encampments without the need for external hookups.
Private cabins: The trailers feature four individual, private cabins. Each cabin includes a hot-water shower, ceramic sink, standard toilet, mirror, and a small space for changing clothes.
Accessibility: Each trailer includes a fully ADA-compliant cabin, equipped with access ramps and safety grab bars, as well as a baby changing station.
High capacity: A single trailer can comfortably provide up to 50 showers per day, or approximately 250 hot showers per week.
Comprehensive support services
Unlike standard mobile shower units, the program’s “Wellness” approach incorporates medical, behavioral, and administrative support directly at the deployment site:
Hygiene kits: Users receive a toiletry bag containing clean towels, washcloths, and recycled soap produced through the Clean the World organization’s hospitality industry recycling programs.
Medical care and preventive medicine: On-site teams frequently coordinate the presence of mobile medical units to administer Hepatitis A and C vaccines, conduct disease prevention screenings, and perform basic health check-ups.
Administrative assistance: Staff help users process official documents—such as state IDs and birth certificates—which are essential requirements for accessing long-term housing programs.
Referrals and transitions: Volunteers facilitate active, comprehensive connections to local services for addiction recovery, mental health counseling, job training, and emergency housing.
Key regional operations
The WASH Foundation coordinates with municipal governments, public libraries, and religious institutions to establish consistent weekly schedules:
Florida (Orange County/Orlando area): Regular schedules are established that rotate among regional resource centers, such as the Christian Service Center and Powerhouse Church.
Nevada (Las Vegas region): Units deploy to selected municipal centers, including weekly afternoon stops at locations such as the Whitney Library District Hub.
Multi-state coverage: Additional trailers operate routes across designated metropolitan areas in California and major East Coast hubs.

What to expect when visiting a mobile unit
Visiting a mobile shower and hygiene unit is a simple and welcoming experience, designed to respect your privacy and comfort. Although the exact setup may vary slightly depending on the organization, most programs follow the same fundamental steps to ensure a safe and organized visit.
Here is exactly what you can expect from the moment you arrive:
1. Registration and intake
First-come, first-served: Most mobile units manage a physical sign-up list. Ideally, you should arrive early during scheduled hours to secure a spot.
Few barriers to access: You do not need identification, a fixed address, or proof of income to register.
Waiting area: While waiting for your name to be called, many sites offer a rest area with chairs, water, coffee, and sometimes hot meals or clothing racks.
2. Receiving items
When your name is called, volunteers will provide you with a complete, single-use hygiene kit. It typically includes:
- A clean, freshly laundered bath towel and washcloth.
- Travel-sized personal care items (shampoo, conditioner, body wash, or bar soap).
- A toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, and shaving supplies, if needed.
- New packs of socks and underwear.
3. Using the private cabin
Total privacy: You will be assigned a private, individual cabin inside the trailer, equipped with a lockable door.
Facilities: Inside, you will find a hot shower with adjustable temperature, a sink, a mirror, a flush toilet, and a dry area or hooks to keep your clothes and belongings clean and dry.
Time limits: To ensure everyone on the list gets a turn, users are generally asked to limit their time inside the cabin to 15–20 minutes.
4. Disinfection and preparation for the next turn
Thorough cleanup: Upon leaving, you must place your used towel in a designated bin for soiled linens.
Deep cleaning: Before calling the next person, a team member will immediately enter the cabin to scrub, disinfect, and thoroughly clean all surfaces, ensuring a completely clean environment for every user.
5. Comprehensive support
Depending on the program (such as ShowerUp or Fresh Start), you can often access other essential resources at the same location, either before or after your shower:
Mobile laundry service: Some units feature a second trailer where you can drop off a load of laundry to be washed and dried while you wait.
On-site services: You may find street-based medical teams offering free health check-ups, case managers assisting with housing applications, or administrative support for obtaining official state IDs and birth certificates.
